  "projectDescription": "Dramatic changes in estuarine shellfish populations have occurred throughout the east coast of the United States due to disease, loss of habitat, over-harvesting, and pollution. A primary reason for the demise of oysters is often the lack of shell substrate to serve as host for juvenile oysters. To begin the process of restoring shellfish populations, South Carolina established its first oyster shell recycling repository at Bennett's Point in Colleton County. The collected recycled shell was utilized to rebuild local reefs and conduct valuable research into oyster restoration.",
