  "projectDescription": "Monument Pond is a 3-acre freshwater pond located in Mariners Marsh Preserve in the northwest of Staten Island, NY. Shorebirds and wading birds, common to coastal marshes, utilize Monument Pond and six other ponds in the preserve for foraging and cover. The project consisted of control of a single invasive species, common reed or Phragmites. Hand pulling, repeat mowing and a single hand-brushed herbicide application over two years were utilized to remove the reed. One-quarter of an acre of  emergent pond habitat was rehabilitated. Plantings consisted of over one thousand seedling plugs of 25 species of emergent vegetation and hundreds of saplings of 10 species of facultative wetland shrubs and trees. The plants were placed primarily in the shallow water zone to provide the pond with a diversity of native plant material and surface structure designed to improve inland aquatic habitat for small fish, invertebrates and turtles.",
