  "projectDescription": "Saw Mill Creek Marsh Preserve is a 135-acre complex of salt marshes, swamp forests and sandy coastal hummocks adjacent to the Arthur Kill tidal straight in Staten Island NY. An area of 4 acres of formerly connected tidal marsh was separated from diurnal tidal flow by an earthen dike wall, which had been constructed around the 1950s. This marsh system had received infrequent tidal exchange through one main breach in the dike wall. Sedimentation had increased behind the dike wall, resulting in an expansion of common reed (Phragmites australis) into half of the marsh area (2 acres). The restoration plan removed the dike wall to allow tidal flow into the interior. This effort was funded through the DARRP program from the Exxon Bayway oil spill settlement, as well as a contribution from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund.",
