"projectDescription": "NOAA's Community-Based Restoration Program and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided partial funding for the removal of Australian pines in the 2-mile dune restoration at Blind Creek Park on South Hutchinson Island, St. Lucie County, Florida. The presence of non-native Australian pines in the park has resulted in increased erosion and reduced nesting areas for several species of endangered and threatened sea turtles. The roots act as a physical barrier for Green, Leatherback, and Loggerhead turtles trying to excavate nesting sites. Approximately 1.5 miles of the 2-mile project were cleared of Australian pine and approximately 25 acres of native dune vegetation was planted by community volunteers.",
