"projectDescription": "The goal of this project is to compile a comprehensive inventory of the existing microorganisms in the water and sediments in Tampa Bay and to sample ballast waters from ships entering the Tampa Bay Port. Ships are known to act as vectors for the transfer of toxic and harmful microorganisms via ballast water discharges into ports and harbors. This project successfully sampled the ballasts of foreign vessels entering the Port of Tampa along with local sediment and water and tested for water-borne or sediment-residing life stages of harmful microalgae. Additionally, the project successfully modified the sampling protocols for testing for microalgae in Tampa. A 151-page report was completed detailing the issue of \"ballast Water as an Accidental Vector for the Introduction of Harmful Microalgae Species into Tampa Bay, FL.\"",
