  "projectDescription": "The NOAA Restoration Center partnered with Southeast Alaska Guidance Association (SAGA) to continue restoration efforts along Duck Creek near Mendenhall Valley, Alaska. Volunteers planted riparian vegetation on the banks of Duck Creek to stabilize the creek and stop erosion. Historically, Duck Creek supported runs of nearly 10,000 chum salmon and 500 Coho salmon. Agricultural development, urbanization, and relocation of the lower channel for airport development sharply degraded habitat quality. Today the chum run is extinct and the Coho run is only a few dozen fish annually. Youth Corps participants were involved in activities that included sediment removal, channel reconfiguration, and re-vegetation with native plants to enhance salmon habitat.",
