  "projectDescription": "Henderson Inlet has been a prime shellfish growing area for generations, but increased urbanization led to higher  pollution levels, which forced the permanent closure of 120 acres to commercial harvesting. Corrective actions at the local level had been stalled due to a lack of community support. Through this project, local citizens developed and maintained shellfish growing areas in an area that had been occasionally closed to shellfish growing due to poor water quality in the inlet.The sites were seeded with more than 280,000 oyster seed, and volunteers assisted with all aspects of the shellfish farm, including transporting seeds to planting sites, preparing oyster beds, and spreading seed at designated sites. Returning shellfish to local tide flats has helped to restore water quality, as shellfish help to remove excess nutrients that enter local waterways. Shellfish also provide food and habitat for a host of species.",
