"projectDescription": "Lummi Nation will advance three high-priority salmon recovery and river restoration projects along the South Fork Nooksack River. Salmon are an iconic and keystone species, important for local economies and the culture and well-being of the Lummi Nation. Populations are severely depressed, and historical river modification and timber harvesting has degraded river habitat resulting in high summer temperatures affecting spring-run Chinook Salmon that are now regionally rare. This effort uses engineered log jams to restore cold pools and habitat complexity to three reaches of the river as part of a 20-year effort to recover river conditions. The project indirectly supports southern resident killer whales by increasing chinook salmon, their preferred prey. The Fobes Engineering Log Jams included the Lower Fobes and Upper Fobes Phase 2 projects, installing 8 engineering log jams at Lower Fobes and 11 engineering log jams at Upper Fobes, with an additional 8.1 acres of invasive butterfly bush removed and 5 riparian acres planted. This work was completed in 2023 through 2024.",
