"projectDescription": "This culvert replacement project on Gurney Creek at Morton Road (Mason County, MI) is part of an award to Trout Unlimited (TU) that will open up a combined 55 miles of high-quality Great Lakes tributary habitat through the removal and replacement of 8 barriers to stream crossings in northern Michigan and Wisconsin. Gurney Creek is a coastal tributary to Lake Michigan, supporting populations of trout (anadromous and resident). The crossing at Morton Road was identified as a barrier to aquatic organism passage, as the culvert becomes perched above the stream channel during low flows, and was prioritized by multiple stakeholders, including Trout Unlimited and the Mason County road commission. The Gurney Creek project proposes to replace the existing undersized culvert with a timber bridge, designed to improve aquatic organism passage and stream flow. The proposed timber bridge will have a maximum span of 19.5 feet by 8 foot rise by 36 foot length. The overall goal of the larger project is to implement recommendations from a national network of shared priority waters and to develop strategic action plans to address fish passage in the priority waters of the Lake Superior and Lake Michigan basins, while building local capacity to address future fish passage projects in these watersheds. All project sites have a direct connection to Lake Michigan, with no known fish passage barriers existing downstream.",
