"projectDescription": "The Brush Creek Fish Passage Improvement Project is situated within the Yakama Nation Reservation in south-central Washington State. Located in the Klickitat River Watershed, the project addresses a fish passage barrier on Brush Creek at the 175 Road crossing, home to ESA-threatened Middle Columbia River steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Brush Creek is a key tributary to White Creek which is of ecological importance for steelhead, generating over 30% of ocean-bound steelhead juvenile outmigrants from the Klickitat River Basin. This crossing is a top-tier priority in the Klickitat Salmon Recovery Strategy. The project involves replacing a three-culvert barrier that currently blocks access to 3.5 miles of habitat for O. mykiss juvenile rearing and adult spawning in Brush Creek. The barrier consists of three undersized, lateral culverts, perched above the streambed, which impede fish passage during low-flow conditions and create velocity barriers during high flows. The undersized culverts would be removed, and new bridge crossing footings would be excavated using an excavator, backhoe loader, and crane truck. Pre-cast concrete footings and rock slope protection would be built along the stream banks. A 35-foot-long open span bridge deck would then be placed on the footings and backfilled with six inches of aggregate to match the existing 175 Road grade. This project will restore access to critical habitat and improve long-term viability of priority infrastructure.",
