"projectDescription": "Sunnyside Dam Design Alternative Analyses: This project will advance a robust public engagement with key water users and stakeholders to help guide data collection and analysis and lay the groundwork for the alternative design development for options that improve fish passage at this barrier to downstream smolt survival. Existing knowledge and initial discussions with stakeholders have identified the need to evaluate the effect of alternatives on smolt entrainment and sediment continuity at this irrigation diversion in the Lower Yakima River Basin. This project is part of a significant award to improve fish passage to the entire Yakima watershed by working to address four barriers along the lower Yakima River, as well as barriers in two steelhead priority sub-basins, Toppenish Creek and the Teanaway River. This project plans to 1) Identify alternatives and complete project designs for the four lower Yakima River low head dams that will bring the dams into compliance with NOAA fish passage guidelines, potentially increasing overall survival for juvenile salmon and steelhead by 15-40%; Reduce the average number of weeks that fish ladders are blocked, halting upstream passage, from 14 days to 0; 3) Open 36 miles of high quality habitat on Toppenish Creek for juvenile salmon and steelhead seeking to migrate upstream from the warming lower intermittent reaches in early summer; and 4) Open two miles of salmon and steelhead habitat on Middle Creek in the Teanaway Basin.",
