"projectDescription": "Eskutassis Stream is located in the Passadumkeag River subwatershed of the Penobscot. There are two dams on this stream that block fish passage, both located in the Town of Lowell, Maine. ASF will remove the upper dam, which is situated near the outlet of Eskutassis Pond, and construct a nature-like fishway at the lower dam, which forms Grist Mill Pond. Once passage is restored at the two sites, river herring and other sea-run and resident fish species will have access to 1,025 acres of habitat in Eskutassis, Little Eskutassis, and Grist Mill Ponds and 2.21 miles of stream, which contain an estimated 88.1 Atlantic salmon habitat units. This work will restore a population of at least 240,000 alewives in Eskutassis Pond, providing a substantial contribution to the restoration of river herring within the Passadumkeag. American eel, Atlantic salmon, sea lamprey, and Eastern brook trout will also directly benefit from restored habitat connectivity associated with this project. This project site is part of a larger award and a broader effort to advance the restoration of sea-run fisheries in the Penobscot Watershed with ASF.This project supports the planning, design, engineering, permitting, and construction of fish passage at Eskutassis Stream.",
