"projectDescription": "The Evans Creek Fish Passage and Creek Enhancement Project will restore ancestral migration access to support the recovery of federally endangered CCC coho salmon and federally threatened steelhead in Portola Redwoods State Park. There are two barriers limiting fish movement on Evans Creek: a 100 ft. long culvert just upstream of the confluence of Evans Creek and Peters Creek, and a 13 ft high concrete dam that is approximately 2,000 ft. upstream of the culvert site. This project will permanently remove the two barriers and install natural habitat features to sort and store sediment and increase instream habitat complexity. The project will also install large wood on Evans Creek and Peters Creek via directional felling methods and by pulling or dropping in already-downed trees near the creek. In recent years, NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has been working with staff from local Resource Conservation Districts, CA State Parks, CDFW and other local partners to develop plans for a large wood installation program for anadromous streams located within public lands of the Santa Cruz Mountains. A low abundance of instream large wood and reduced instream habitat complexity were identified as major limiting factors in the Santa Cruz Mountains Diversity Strata in NMFS’s recovery plans for CCC coho salmon and CCC steelhead.",
