"projectDescription": "The Upper ER Collins Dam is situated near the mouth of the Pequest River with the Delaware River. The Pequest is a 35-mile-long creek, with a 158 square mile watershed that opens to the Delaware River at Belvidere NJ and ascends rapidly into the surrounding Appalachian highlands. The Upper and Lower ER Collins Dams once supported small mills in Belvidere. 11 mainstem stream miles will be opened through forests and agricultural land, some of which will be accessible to Shad, River Herring, Sea Lamprey and American eel. An additional 50 miles of small tributaries will be opened (American eel). These stream miles are dependent on the removal of two upstream dams located within 3.5 and 6.9 miles of the Collins Dams but not included in the application. The immediate benefit will be the opening of an additional 3.0 miles. The Delaware River is a major population center for anadromous species and no less than six regional conservation plans cite the importance of sustaining these populations. Once the dams are removed this watershed will support the larger Delaware River watershed's diadromous populations. The Upper ER Collins removal will have a co-benefit of mitigating flooding in downtown Belvidere. Temporary economic impacts are suggested by the dam removals and there is hope that Belvidere will become known as a river town (small boat paddling will be made possible) and tourism will expand.",
