"projectDescription": "The Mary's River Watershed Council is supporting threatened Upper Willamette River Chinook and steelhead by addressing 18 fish passage barriers across multiple watersheds in the Mid-Willamette region, in partnership with 4 other watershed councils. Efforts include removing a dam, conducting an alternatives analysis to provide fish passage at another dam, and replacing several culverts to reopen access to more than 40 miles of habitat. This effort will also support local communities by reducing the risk of flooding and helping improve response to wildfires. Environmental education is a component in many of the projects. The South Santiam 500 Culvert Replacement project, led by South Santiam Watershed Council, is addressing a fish passage barrier on a cold water tributary of the Santiam River by removing three side by side undersized culverts and replacing them with a single arch culvert with a simulated stream. This effort is reopening 1.25 miles of stream habitat for Chinook salmon and steelhead upstream of Foster Dam.",
