"projectDescription": "The Skagit River System Cooperative, which provides natural resource management services for the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community and the Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe, will work to support salmon and other fish species in the Skagit River. The project will restore 55 acres of streamside habitat, upgrade a native plant nursery, and build the capacity of the tribes to identify and plan future restoration work. The Skagit Chinook Recovery Plan identified degraded riparian areas as a limiting factor for Chinook rearing and conditions within the riparian habitats of most of the Skagit River reaches are significantly impaired. Furthermore, most of the lower Skagit tributaries have warm water temperatures in the summer months. Four tributaries of the Skagit have consistently exceeded 60 degrees, and Nookachamps Creek reached 80 degrees in 2018, according to county data. Water temperatures above 64 degrees stress salmon and exceeding 70 can be deadly. The project would restore riparian habitat in 55 acres along the Skagit River and its tributaries. This will create functioning riparian zones that will provide shade, structure, and large woody debris. Shade lowers water temperatures. Large woody debris increases habitat for rearing salmon, provides holding areas for spawning salmon, and creates refuge during flood events for different life stages of all salmonid species.",
