  "projectDescription": "The South Prairie Creek Project will restore 163 acres of floodplain habitat and will extend restoration work around a 50-acre floodplain restoration project constructed in 2020. The watershed the primary producer of fall Chinook salmon, steelhead, and coho salmon in the Puyallup River side of the Puyallup/White River basin. Existing conditions are the result of floodplain deforestation and hardening of channel banks, which have led to increased velocities, simplified channel form, incision, over-sized substrate, and a lack of wood structure to form complex habitat. Limited tree canopy for shade, reduced floodplain connectivity, and impaired natural water storage to support thermal habitat diversity have resulted in near lethal temperatures for fish during periods of low flow. Proposed project methods are centered on actions that: enhance connections to existing cold-water inputs; restore wetland function and groundwater recharge to support thermal diversity; increase instream structure, hyporheic exchange and channel complexity; and bring back native vegetation communities to restore valley bottom forests and wetlands.",
