"projectDescription": "The majority of the Hood Canal Bridge rests on pontoons that extend 15 feet deep for 80% of the width of the canal. Salmon and steelhead originating from the 270 miles of freshwater habitat upstream of the Bridge must cross it to reach the Pacific Ocean and then again when they return to spawn. The Hood Canal Bridge Ecosystem Impacts Assessment has three phases to access and address salmon mortality, namely steelhead, at the Bridge. Phase 1 of the Assessment began in 2015 when federal, state, local, Tribal, and nonprofit partners developed a plan to better understand the causes of the high steelhead mortality at the Bridge. Two years of data collection indicated up to 50% perish at the Bridge. Data collection on two pilot near-term mitigation solutions, fish guidance structures and acoustic startle technology, is ongoing. The Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe along with their partner, Long Live the Kings, are seeking funds for portions of Phase 2 of the Hood Canal Bridge Ecosystem Impacts Assessment. Project elements funded by this NOAA award include: 1) Develop a Near-Term Fish Passage Mitigation Plan based on Phase 2 solutions testing data analysis and synthesis, 2) Create a Hood Canal Bridge Replacement Evaluation Report a bridge design that facilitates unimpeded fish passage, completes a Socioeconomic and Environmental Justice Study and development of a high level bridge replacement design, and 3) build Tribal capacity to address fish passage barriers.",
