"projectDescription": "Project partners (CalTrout) plan to remove the final two barriers obstructing Trabuco Creek, a significant tributary to San Juan Creek (SJC.) This project will grant endangered southern steelhead access to 15 miles of pristine upstream habitat, linking them to the SJC watershed and reinstating anadromy in the Santa Ana Mountains' headwaters, located nearly 30 miles inland. The restoration efforts include reinstating sediment transport and ensuring unimpeded access for steelhead. These goals will be accomplished through the construction of two 600-foot hydraulic, nature-like fishways (located at a Metrolink bridge and the I-5 bridge array.) This initiative is a crucial step toward reestablishing steelhead populations in their historical spawning grounds within Trabuco Creek's headwaters. This project builds upon the recent removal of over 80 check dams in the upper Trabuco Creek and SJC watershed by the US Forest Service. This project will support the Acjachemen community through funding quarterly educational events focused on tribal history, culture, and the importance of trout and native plants. Construction is projected to span from January 1, 2026 (pending NOAA award and final permitting) to December 31, 2027.",
