  "projectDescription": "The Rockafellows Mills Dam on the South Branch of the Raritan River lies between the towns of Readington  and Raritan Townships in NJ. The award covers project planning, technical studies, feasibility analyses, engineering and design, permitting, implementation and monitoring. The removal of the Rockafellows Mills Dam holds substantial  ecological benefits on a watershed-level, particularly concerning migratory fish species including American shad, American eel, river herring, sea lamprey, white perch and striped bass. As a full barrier removal, this action will allow migratory access to approximately 12.4 miles of primary forested riparian river habitat along the South Branch and an additional 35.1 miles within low gradient tributaries and upstream backwaters for a total of 47.5 stream miles. The abundance of rural tributary streams and backwaters of the mid reaches of the Raritan watershed provide excellent habitat opportunity for spawning, nursery and larval rearing - having been obstructed by mill dams since in the late 1700's. In the regional context, the 1,000 square mile watershed of the Raritan is among the largest watersheds in the Mid-Atlantic.",
