  "projectDescription": "The Nooksack Indian Tribe will work with US Geological Survey and local partners to explore how wetland restoration can be used to restore summer flows to the Southfork Nooksack River. The South Fork is rain and snow-fed, and historical river and floodplain modification and forest management has left the river with low flows and high summer temperatures that are killing fish. Future climate projections suggest worsening conditions. This project will explore the best opportunities to divert stream and river flood flows into large wetlands like those that once covered areas of the floodplain. Water in wetlands soak into groundwater feeding cold water to the river over summer. The river is home to multiple anadromous fisheries including a Spring Chinook salmon subpopulation critical to the recovery of the Puget Sound Chinook Population.",
