  "projectDescription": "Litter in the Raritan River is particularly apparent after large rainstorms that wash debris from our streets and cities into streams and their floodplains. In addition to being an eyesore, litter harms aquatic habitats, transports chemical pollutants, threatens aquatic life, and interferes with human use of the environment. This project funds the installation of a trash trap device in the Green Brook tributary. Traps such as these use downstream currents to direct and trap floating trash items in a large net. Local non-profit orgs currently host stream cleanup events throughout the year, and this device will build upon those efforts while acting as an educational tool to demonstrate the magnitude of litter that collects in our streams. Funds have been issued to Dunellen Twp. to fund the purchase of a Bandalong Bandit Litter Trap, for a location in the Green Brook. Dunellen has agreed to maintain the Litter Trap, including emptying and disposing of collected trash from the trap for approximately ten (10) years. Funds have been issued to the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership to fund outreach and monitoring associated with the trap, including installation of interpretive signage; development of protocols and training for litter surveys and project database to be shared with the general public and; hosting removal demonstration and education events. Funding for the project was achieved through a Trustees Resolution made by the CDE Superfund Settlement Trustees Council.",
