  "projectDescription": "Freshwater mussel surveys and restoration. Healthy mussel populations play a key role in cleaning our drinking water sources: a single mussel can filter up to 20 gallons of water per day, removing excess nutrients, algae, and potential contaminants from the water column. Unfortunately, mussel populations throughout the United States are in decline, largely due to habitat loss. The Raritan River watershed is home to a variety of common mussel species, as well as several species listed on New Jersey's endangered and threatened list. This project will expand mussel surveys within the North Branch Raritan River, the Lamington River, and the Stony Brook. Researchers will evaluate population status, investigate possible reasons for decline, and identify appropriate strategies to conserve and restore mussel populations. Funding for the project was achieved through a Trustees Resolution made by the Cornell Dubilier Superfund Settlement Trustees Council.",
