"projectDescription": "Swamp Pink Protection and Restoration. East Brunswick, New Jersey, is home to the northeastern-most known population of swamp pink in the United States. Swamp pink is a plant in the lily family that was once found in wetlands from New York to Georgia, but now primarily ranges from New Jersey to Virginia . This species was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1988, primarily due to habitat loss and destruction. As its name implies, swamp pink is a sensitive wetland plant that lives in swamps, and is often found on mounds or “hummocks” created by Atlantic white cedar trees, sphagnum moss, and other wetland plants. The East Brunswick population is currently in danger from browsing deer, changing water levels and declining habitat. The East Brunswick Swamp Pink Restoration project will provide fencing to keep browsing deer away from the plants, encourage the growth of adjacent young white cedar saplings (facilitating swamp pink habitat), and monitor the water levels in the area as well as the swamp pink population for a minimum of five years. Similar actions have proven beneficial to swamp pink populations in other parts of New Jersey. Funding for the project was achieved through a Trustees Resolution made by the Cornell Dubilier Superfund Settlement Trustees Council.",
