"projectDescription": "Most dams in New Jersey are well over 100 years old, are no longer used, and at risk of falling into disrepair. This combination often leads to unwanted maintenance costs and potentially unexpected structural failures. In 2018, ice damage created a 30-foot breach in the Califon Dam (also known as the Coles Mill Dam) located in Califon, on the South Branch of the Raritan River. This breach altered the river’s watercourse, causing erosion that may eventually undermine a section of a local road. The dam, originally built to power a small mill operation, has been unused since the late 1800s. The dam creates a shallow seven-acre impoundment that heats up in the summer and becomes choked with aquatic plant growth, creating unhealthy conditions for fish and other aquatic species. Removing the dam will remove the threat to the local road, and improve water quality at the site and in the Ken Lockwood Gorge downstream – good news for trout! Funding for the project was achieved through a Trustees Resolution made by the Cornell Dubilier Superfund Settlement Trustees Council.",
