"projectDescription": "The Penobscot Indian Nation will assess the Matagamon Lake Dam for fish passage and stream flow alternatives. The dam is a barrier to upstream passage for Atlantic salmon, American eel, and eastern brook trout. The current fishway is 80 years old. This is one portion of a larger project with long-term benefits of increasing available cold-water, climate-resilient habitats and improving habitat quality and availability in the entire East Branch of the Penobscot River’s Designated Critical Habitat for Atlantic salmon. Cumulatively, the effort will remove five passage barriers, make approximately 150 stream miles more accessible to migratory fish, improve access for alewives to 3,305 surface acres of lakes for spawning and rearing, and identify, survey, and design an additional five aquatic connectivity projects.Work includes completion of Matagamon Lake Dam feasibility study.",
