  "projectDescription": "American Rivers will collaborate with partners to plan for the partial removal and modification of the Buckhorn Dam on the Upper Cape Fear River in Sanford, North Carolina. When removed, 8.5 miles of habitat will be accessible for several migratory fish species, including American shad, river herring, striped bass, Atlantic sturgeon, and American eel. It will also enhance recreation opportunities and reduce the threat to public safety by adding unimpeded river access from Sanford to Fayetteville. This project addresses the goals of the Cape Fear River Basin Action Plan for Migratory Fish, and is one of five projects that American Rivers is implementing in the Upper Cape Fear River and Lower Deep River that will result in the opening of approximately 100 miles of mainstem habitat and 1024 miles of perennial stream habitat.",
