  "projectDescription": "Lummi Nation will advance three high-priority salmon recovery and river restoration projects along the South Fork Nooksack River. Salmon are an iconic and keystone species, important for local economies and the culture and well-being of the Lummi Nation. Populations are severely depressed, and historical river modification and timber harvesting has degraded river habitat resulting in high summer temperatures affecting spring-run Chinook Salmon that are now regionally rare. This effort uses engineered log jams to restore cold pools and habitat complexity to three reaches of the river as part of a 20-year effort to recover river conditions. The project indirectly supports southern resident killer whales by increasing chinook salmon, their preferred prey.Lummi Nation will advance preliminary designs for habitat restoration at the South Fork Black Slough reach on the mainstem of the South Fork Nooksack River. Like the other projects in this award, the designs will include engineered log jam structures to provide geomorphic and habitat benefits to the river and fish.",
