"projectDescription": "The Mid Klamath Watershed Council will partner with the Karuk Tribe to complete the first two phases of a multi-phase restoration effort in Red Cap Creek, a tributary to the Klamath River in California. Two off-channel ponds with complex wood jams will be added to a 0.5 mile reach of channel, and a gravel injection plan will be developed to inform further habitat restoration in the reach. The project will implement high priority actions for the recovery of Southern Oregon Northern California coho salmon and will also benefit Chinook salmon, steelhead, and Pacific Lamprey. These species are central to the religion, diet, and way of life for the Karuk, Yurok, and Hupa tribes in the area. The Karuk Tribe Fisheries Program will advise on design and implementation of the projects, conduct project monitoring, and co-lead planting and project field trips for local youth. The project is located on Karuk ancestral lands owned by Six Rivers National Forest, and is frequently used as a traditional gathering place for acorns and other native materials.",
