"projectDescription": "The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission, in partnership with the City of Benton Harbor, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, and the University of Michigan will build staff and community capacity to restore Ox Creek, which bisects the City of Benton Harbor. In the recent past, local residents generally regarded the creek as a \"polluted ditch\". Through multiple public engagement efforts prior to this project, community members began reimagining Ox Creek as a vibrant recreational and economically revitalized corridor. Building on this momentum, the project will hire a full-time City administrator, establish a coalition of residents and local organizations, and conduct other public engagement activities to develop and inform a habitat restoration plan. The project will also include design and construction of a pilot Ox Creek habitat restoration project in Benton Harbor’s largest public park.",
