  "projectDescription": "As part of the FERC license requirements for the Roanoke-Gaston Hydroelectric, upstream eel passage was required at the Gaston project post construction of upstream passage at Roanoke Rapids project just downstream.  Construction was completed in 2021 for the North and South eelway at Gaston project consisting of sloped eel ladders with a specialized substrate to assist with climbing. The two eel passage facilities constructed below Gaston Dam allow American Eels to access collection tanks for temporary retention prior to transport upstream of the dam.  As part of license requirements, eelway effectiveness studies will continue through 2022-2023 to monitor safe passage and the proportion of the population in Roanoke Rapids Lake accessing the newly constructed upstream eelways at Gaston.",
