"projectDescription": "The goal of the project is to restore salmonid habitat complexity in a 3-mile reach of mainstem Big River, a high-priority watershed for Central California Coast Coho and Northern California Steelhead recovery, by installing moderate to large-scale engineered log jam structures (ELJ). These structures will be used to create habitat diversity and flow complexity for Coho Salmon, Steelhead Trout and Chinook Salmon to improve both summer and winter rearing conditions. The objective of the proposed project is to enhance habitats lacking in channel complexity in a high priority recovery area. Once implemented, the ELJs will provide physical shelter, promote diversity in flow velocity structure where fish can harbor during higher velocity events, create scouring forces to develop a complex channel bed with deep pools, and locally raise the water surface elevation to increase floodplain connectivity. As feasible, the proposed ELJs will be used to augment tributary off-channel habitat in two tributaries where they confluence with the Big River in the project area.",
