  "projectDescription": "The project is located within the Neefus Gulch watershed, which is a tributary to the North Fork (NF) Navarro River in Mendocino County, and is a high priority for Central California Coast Coho Salmon and Northern California Steelhead recovery. For decades, an 18' high earthen dam on Neefus Gulch formed a ~1.13-acre stock pond that drowned more than 550 feet of stream channel and formed a complete barrier to salmonids. The retention of sediment by the berm also caused incision and loss of spawning gravels in the downstream channel. Implementation of this project occurred in 2024, with partial funding from a NOAA CRP award (FY2021) and a BIL-FP award (FY2023), providing salmon and steelhead access to ~1.36 miles of upstream habitat. The earthen berm and spillway were removed, sediments associated with the pond were excavated, and ~1,600 feet of stream channel was restored, including large wood habitat structures. The project site is 0.25 miles upstream from the Appian Way stream crossing, a site restored by TU, NOAA, and the Wildlife Conservation Board in 2021 (Neefus Gulch Fish Passage Phase I).",
