Kerr-McGee Restoration funds coupled with leveraged funds allowed for full acquisition of the conservation area. The tract lies entirely within the Natural Heritage Program’s exceptionally significant Northeast Cape Fear Floodplain Natural Area, and consists primarily of tidally influenced swamp forest and 2.5 miles of buffer along Merrick Creek.. Conservation of this site via fee simple purchase was desirable due to its linkages to other conservation lands and its importance for anadromous fish species.",
