"projectDescription": "McCoys Creek, a tributary of the St. Johns River, is located within the urban landscape of Jacksonville, FL. ln the 1920s, the creek was entirely replaced with straightened ditches and bulkhead canals while the accompanying floodplain and wetlands were filled. In addition, the McCoys channel connection to the St. Johns River has been relocated and buried by an 850-foot culvert. The project partner Groundworks Jacksonville, Inc. intends to create wintering habitat for Atlantic Sturgeon as well as Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for red drum and lane snapper. The project design will seek to remove the 850 ft. culvert and daylight the stream creating: 4,000 ft. of open channel, 11 acres of tidal marsh, and 5.5 acres of open water habitat to provide ecological, recreational, and flood mitigation benefits. Planning, engineer work, and permitting will require data collection, modeling, outreach, and other traditional design processes. This project is part of a larger initiative to restore habitat and provide public passive recreational amenities along the 2.8 mile creek. The project is currently at 30% design and will complete 100% design and permitting process during this award period.",
