"projectDescription": "Historic shoreline hardening has degraded habitat in this Lake St. Clair coastal site and the ability to support healthy populations of native aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. There has been a 99.9 percent reduction in Lake St. Clair natural shoreline in Macomb County, MI, with only 2,140 linear feet of the 31.5 miles of shoreline remaining in natural condition. As one of the few remaining areas on the U.S. Lake St. Clair coastline that is suitable for large-scale shoreline restoration, the project at Ford Cove was identified as a state priority for coastal restoration. The engineering and design phase of this project will develop a plan for the implementation of restoration of degraded coastal wetland, nearshore, and shoreline habitat in a heavily developed section of Lake St. Clair. The work will be completed in two phases. The first phase included the design and implementation of a wooded wetland restoration followed by the design and implementation of the shoreline restoration. The wooded wetland was completed in fall 2025. The shoreline phase is to begin winter 2025/2026. This project will ultimately restore 5.5 acres of coastal marsh, 8 acres of nearshore habitat, 4 acres of adjacent forested wetland, and roughly 1 mile of Great Lakes shoreline to benefit several native species including northern pike, muskellunge, smallmouth/largemouth bass, and yellow perch.",
