  "projectDescription": "NOAA worked with Snohomish County to complete a tidal reconnection and estuary restoration project at Meadowdale Beach Park. The habitat restoration project is part of a larger project to replace an undersized culvert under a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad with a bridge. This larger project included site prep, railroad bridge construction, estuary restoration, and park improvements. NOAA only funded and was involved in the estuary restoration portion of the project. The new bridge created a 90-ft wide opening at the mouth of Lund's Gulch to allow for tidal exchange and restoration of a 1.3 acre estuary, providing rearing habitat for juvenile salmon. This restored hydrologic connection and allowed for 2.2 miles of stream habitat access for ESA-listed Chinook salmon. In addition, 15,400 cubic yards of fill was removed so that a natural meander of the creek and sediment transport processes were restored. The project included large wood placement for increased habitat complexity and instream habitat enhancement. The project removed a portion of the shoreline armoring, which is a key stressor in the Puget Sound ecosystem.",
