"projectDescription": "The pre-existing crossing at the Hall Road crossing of Thunder Bay River consisted of three corrugated metal pipe culverts set in a headwall of concrete bags that precluded migration of brook trout and other species in the Thunder Bay River from accessing high quality habitat upstream from this crossing (and from moving among tributary streams separated by the existing crossing). The center culvert measured 28 feet in length, with a 15-foot span and height of 11 feet. The side culverts were 28’ by 5.2’ by 5.5’ each. The three culverts provided an open span of approximately 25 feet. In contrast, bankfull width at an adjacent reference riffle was measured to be 40 feet. The water velocity at the structure outlet was 5 feet per second which created a velocity barrier for brook trout and other aquatic organisms. The Montmorency County Road Commission identified this site as a priority for restoration. Through this project, designs were developed for a new timber bridge that fully spans bankfull width and restores hydrology, geomorphology and transport of sediment and woody debris to a more natural condition. Now implemented, this project reconnects approximately 39 miles of upstream coldwater habitat in the Thunder Bay River and its tributaries above this crossing.",
