"projectDescription": "American Rivers and the City of Bellingham removed the Middle Fork Nooksack Diversion Dam, and constructed new water supply infrastructure that allows for free fish passage. This was the highest priority project within the Nooksack River Basin for recovery of three threatened salmonid species, and supports the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale that depends on Chinook salmon for food. The overarching goal of this project was to use an ecosystem-based approach to restore fish passage and connectivity in the Nooksack River watershed, increase populations of four species (three threatened anadromous fish species and one NMFS Endangered Species in the Spotlight, the Southern Resident Killer Whale) and restore the Middle Fork to a free-flowing river. This project accomplished the following: remove the Middle Fork Nooksack Diversion Dam and restore the river channel; remove old water supply infrastructure and replace with an innovative system; install a NMFS and WDFW-compliant fish screen; and conduct biological monitoring in restored habitats.",
