  "projectDescription": "The project employed living shoreline techniques including natural and artificial breakwater material and marsh creation to reduce shoreline erosion by dampening wave energy while encouraging reestablishment of habitat that was once present in the region. The project resulted in construction of  5.9 miles (approximately 18 acres) of living breakwater,  46 acres of marsh creation, and 46 acres of sub-tidal reef restoration in Heron Bay to increase secondary productivity in the area. The project has been successful in reducing shoreline erosion, creating habitat for secondary productivity, and protecting and creating salt marsh habitat. To date, 46 acres of sub-tidal reef and 6 miles (approximately 18 acres) of breakwater / inter-tidal reef habitat, and 46 acres of marsh have been restored.  In 2024, the MS Trustee Implementation Group approved Phase 6 of this project, which entails construction of an additional 1.7 miles of living breakwater.
