"projectDescription": "The Muskegon Lake MERES project is located within the Muskegon Lake Area of Concern (AOC). The property is owned by the Muskegon Environment, Research, and Education Society (MERES) and known as the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve. This 27.0-acre shoreline property was once emergent wetland and shallow aquatic habitat. It was initially filled with sawmill wood debris waste from a historic, lumber-era sawmill that operated on the site and later was filled with foundry sand and broken concrete to dispose of waste and create buildable land. However, development never took place and the property was donated to MERES to become the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve. During the first phase of this project, the engineering design for the project will be completed. Design will include topographic, bathymetric, and wildlife survey, as well as soil samples. This design work is expected to lead to the restoration of approximately 3.6 acres of emergent wetland, and 4.34 acres of upland buffer adjacent to wetlands, to restore a total of 7.9 acres of wildlife habitat. The project will also improve 7.9 acres of fill and remove 19,225 metric tons of unnatural fill materials. This work will meet 6.4% of the fill removal Beneficial Use Impairment (BUI) criteria. This will achieve a 5.7% increase toward achieving the overall BUI Removal Target for the AOC.",
