"projectDescription": "The Jones River Watershed Association worked collaboratively with the Town of Kingston and the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration to remove the Elm Street Dam located on the Jones River. The Elm Street Dam limited the ability of key species to access habitats needed for spawning and other life stages. Migratory species such as river herring, American eel, rainbow smelt, American shad, and sea-run trout were partially or completely blocked by the dam. For other native species, the dam severed connectivity between key habitats, limiting the ability of species to adapt to changing conditions. Completion of this project provided enhanced fish passage to approximately 4 miles of the Jones River and an additional 5 miles of tributary stream habitat. The dam was owned and operated by the Town of Kingston and did not have any functional use. The construction phase of this project took place during the fall of 2019.",
