  "projectDescription": "The purpose of this soil placement project is to improve habitat and other ecological services and resilience of 29.1 acres of salt marsh associated with Quonochontaug Pond, a 732-acre salt pond complex (including 80+ acres of salt marsh) in South County, by increasing marsh platform surface elevations and improving normal marsh wetting and drying with positive drainage with the soil placement. Sand placement depths placed on the degrading salt marsh ranged from less than 6 inches to nearly 3 feet; greatest fill depths were associated with filling of former mosquito ditches for marsh restoration. The work included placement of approximately 76,000 cubic yards of sandy sub-aqueous soils dredged from the salt pond breachway channel and pond inlet delta. There are eelgrass beds within Quonochontaug Pond, however recent eelgrass surveys show a reduction in overall eelgrass coverage in the pond that is attributed to shoaling as well as reduction in water quality and reduced clarity from increased nutrient inputs and phytoplankton proliferation resulting from increased development. Maintenance dredging of the channel sub-aqueous soils is expected to improve tidal exchange between Quonochontaug Pond and Block Island Sound, and re-establish increased pond depths in the delta shoaling area to restore eelgrass beds in this area.",
