  "projectDescription": "This project is restoring 8,500 acres of watershed in the Kawaihae 1 (Honokoa) Watershed, which is a highly degraded watershed in South Kohala, Hawaii Island. The health and function of the Kawaihae 1 Watershed’s nearshore coral reef ecosystem is facing detrimental declines due to continuous land-based sedimentation, caused primarily by thousands of feral goats, overgrazing by domestic cattle, deforestation, invasive plants, wildfire, and climate change. Continuous sedimentation is reducing critical ecosystem function and services by degrading habitat for nearshore fish populations, limiting the reef's carrying capacity and ability to support the mammals that rely on a healthy marine ecosystem for prey, such as Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles, and a host of other managed species. The goal of this project is to reduce land-based pollutant loading to the ocean to restore the health of the coral reef ecosystem. Restoration activities consist of excluding and removing feral ungulates, creating and re-vegetating riparian corridor, and capturing sedimentation at its source before it enters streams and runs off into the nearshore coastal environment. In addition, training will be provided to community members in trapping feral ungulates, wildfire management, and re-vegetation, and to rancher-lessees in the watershed on best management practices to reduce erosion and wildfire risk.",
