  "projectDescription": "Hurricane Mathew passed south of Puerto Rico in October 2016 generating large storm waves that impacted a large stand of the ESA listed elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) off of Guanica on the south coast of Puerto Rico.  The large waves damaged many of the elkhorn coral colonies and generated thousands of coral fragments. Restoration efforts focused on saving the at-risk fragments that were loose and were likely going to die.  The impacted area has a large healthy population of A. palmata, so fragments were transplanted to other reefs to assist in recovery of elkhorn populations in other areas.  Approximately 8,500 corals were transplanted to 10 different reefs.  Coral fragments were also brought into 4 different nurseries in Guanica and La Parguera to assist with coral propagation efforts.",
