"projectDescription": "American Rivers, working in partnership with NOAA, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the Friends of the Patapsco Valley State Park, has restored migratory fish species habitat within the Patapsco River through the removal of the Bloede Dam. The 34-foot high by 220-foot long, state-owned Bloede Dam was a documented safety hazard located within the Patapsco Valley State Park and a major limiting factor in sustainable migratory fish populations in the Patapsco River. Removal of the Bloede Dam was the linchpin of a larger effort to remove four mainstem dams on the Patapsco River aimed at restoring upstream spawning habitat for river herring and other migratory species. This project resulted in a free-flowing system and the restoration of the natural form and function of the lower Patapsco River. The Patapsco River Restoration project kicked off with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 with funding to remove the Simkins and Union Dams, located upstream from Bloede Dam. Bloede Dam was the first blockage on the Patapsco River and key to restoring fish passage access to the watershed.Additional funding and accomplishment information for this project can be found under CRP Project Record 4001.",
