"projectDescription": "In 2013 a Fisheries disaster was declared due to low Chinook salmon returns to Cook Inlet. Opening up fish passage in this area would remove fish passage as a limitation on Chinook salmon survival in the Kenai Peninsula. Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) returning to the Kenai River support one of the largest sport fisheries in Alaska as well as commercial fisheries and processing. The Kenai Peninsula Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Project addresses restoration plan goals by eliminating four human-caused barriers to fish and aquatic species passage on the Anchor and Kasilof Rivers:• Location: Crooked Creek at Sterling Hwy. Mile Post 110.5, ADFG Barrier ID # 20300979• Location: North Fork Anchor River at Sterling Hwy Mile Post ~157, ADFG Barrier ID # 20300988• Location: Two Moose Creek – Tributary Anchor River at Sterling Hwy Mile Post 159, Sterling Highway ADFG Barrier ID # 20300989• Location: North Fork Anchor River at Nikolaevsk Road Mile 0, ADFG Barrier ID # 20300985The four barriers identified in this Project request represent the last significant known aquatic species barriers needing to be addressed on the Kenai Peninsula. $8 million in funds for this project were provided by the Exxon Valdez Trustee Council and this was matched by AK DOT. These actions have reconnected fragmented habitat and restored aquatic species access to nearly 95 miles of stream and riparian habitat.",
