  "projectDescription": "Fucus distichus (aka gardneri) is an intertidal seaweed (rockweed) that has been shown to be negatively impacted by oil spills. Two oil spills have occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area in the past 10 years. Before beginning restoration of Fucus in the bay by transplanting remnant individuals to affected areas for \"reseeding\",  the genetic structure of local  populations was assessed to ensure that natural genetic boundaries were not manipulated. Specific genetic structure of Fucus was found within the bay but genetics were not different enough between local sites/populations to require donor individuals to be taken from extremely proximal transplant sites. Rather, it was decided that donor Fucus be taken from Golden Gate Fields and transplanted to Point Isabel for the first stage (trial) of restoration. After monitoring in 2018/2019 there was a decline in the transplants.  It was decided that a new site would have to be established.  In the fall of 2020 new transplants were placed at Giant Marsh/ Richmond, CA.  Monitoring will continue into 2021.  See monitoring section for results.",
