"projectDescription": "This project restored Hawaiian fishponds to improve habitat and increase coastal resilience on Hawaii Island. The Hui Loko network was established and grew to include 23 fishpond and anchialine pool sites. The network actively engaged resource managers, researchers, private landowners, and community stewards in this collective effort. Together, these restoration leaders achieved and exceeded shared goals to increase ecological and community resilience in the West Hawaii Habitat Focus Area and along the Hawaii Island coastline. 3.9 acres were restored at Kiholo Fishpond where TNC and community-led organization Hui Aloha Kiholo hosted 127 community workdays and educational events, mobilizing 3,207 volunteers who contributed 13,950 volunteer hours. The restoration at Kiholo resulted in 894 cubic yards of invasive vegetation cleared, 783 feet of historic fishpond rock walls rebuilt, 2,159 native plants and seeds propagated, and 910 native plants outplanted. In addition, sediment was removed from 0.26 acres (8%) of the fishpond to improve foraging habitat for fish and green sea turtles, and to return the fishpond to its former depth.",
