"projectDescription": "In this second phase of the project, Skagit River Systems Cooperative (SRSC) restored 12.5 acres of channel and floodplain habitat within Illabot Creek for threatened Chinook salmon and other species, as well as 0.33 miles of new creek channels separate from the main channel. Historically Illabot Creek was straightened and diked near the Rockport-Cascade Road. SRSC and Skagit County along with other partners moved Illabot Creek back to its historic channels, removed most of the dikes along the existing channel, constructed two new bridges and maintained the existing bridge on Rockport-Cascade Road. Additionally, they installed habitat features that protect existing infrastructure and support in-stream habitat development. Illabot Creek can now migrate freely across its alluvial fan and floodplain providing more habitat in which Chinook salmon can spawn and coho salmon can rear. SRSC is monitoring the restoration site to determine if the Chinook and coho densities are meeting predictions and to understand how different salmonid species use the site. SRSC also planted an additional 3.0 acres of riparian habitat adjacent to the alluvial fan to further improve aquatic habitat conditions.",
